What is a RAL colour?
RAL is a color matching system which defines colors for paint, coatings and plastics. This standardised system allows you to match any colour globally. The RALfixings stocked collection is a hand curated range of the most popular 40 RAL colours, but there are multiple series of RAL colours comprised of thousands of colours. In 1927 the RAL Classic collection was launched, featuring 40 colours. RAL Classic was updated in 2020 to house 216 colours. In 1993 RAL Design debuted with 1825 further colours. RAL Effects contains 420 solid colours and 70 metallic colours. Finally RAL Plastics is a standardised colour system for plastics containing 300 more colours!
What does RAL stand for in colours?
RAL colours are a system of identifying colours developed by the German State Commission for Delivery Terms and Quality Assurance (Reichsausschuß für Lieferbedingungen und Gütesicherung). RAL is a colour matching system which is similar to the Pantone® system used in printing.
How do I find my RAL code?
The RAL Classic colors have a 4-digit number in combination with the letters 'RAL' (for example RAL 1028). The first digit is a code number that tells you which colour group the shade belongs to (1: yellow, 2: orange, 3: red, 4: violet, 5: blue, 6: green, 7: grey, 8: brown and 9: white and black). The remaining 3 digits are chosen sequentially.
With so many RAL colours to choose from, you can colour match virtually anything! If you don't see the RAL colour you need for your project - don't panic! Contact us for a custom quote. Minimum order quantities and extended lead times may apply.
