45mm x 5.5mm Coloured Hex Head Tek Bolt
The 45mm x 5.5mm is the longest standard Tek bolt in the light section range — 34mm of effective thread engagement, Self-Drilling No.3 point, rated for steel up to 5.0mm. When the 38mm doesn't reach far enough, this is the correct choice. Drive it with an 8mm hex socket, no pilot hole.
It is specified for structural connections where maximum thread depth matters: thick assemblies with standoff layers or packers, heavy-duty bracket fixing, and multi-layer steel subframes where pull-out resistance is a design consideration. The full 34mm of thread in the substrate means this bolt stays put under load, vibration, and thermal movement in a way that shorter options cannot guarantee.
Powder coated to your RAL specification. At 45mm, the bolt is a prominent visual element on any finished installation — the head colour needs to be right, and on a structural connection it also needs to hold. This does both.
Colour Matched to Your RAL Specification
40 stocked RAL colours for standard 3–5 working day lead times. Browse the full stocked range. Any RAL Classic colour to order — if your project has a specific colour requirement that falls outside our stocked range, contact us. We can match it. That's not a special service here — it's what we do.
Typical Applications
The 45mm x 5.5mm is the maximum-engagement option for demanding structural connections:
- Thick multi-layer steel assemblies and sandwich panel subframes
- Structural bracket fixing with significant standoff or packer layers
- Heavy-duty sign frame and sign rail connections
- Steel RHS and SHS connections requiring deep thread engagement
- Secondary steelwork where pull-out resistance is a design requirement
- High-load architectural metalwork and structural cladding systems

Frequently Asked Questions
When would I specify the 45mm over the 38mm?
When you need maximum thread depth — thick multi-layer assemblies, structural connections with a standoff or packer, or heavy bracket fixing where the 38mm's 27mm thread engagement is insufficient. The 45mm gives 34mm of thread in the substrate.
Is it still rated for the same steel thickness?
Yes. The 45mm shares the same Self-Drilling No.3 point rated for steel up to 5.0mm. The longer length increases thread engagement, not drill capacity.
Can I order a bespoke RAL colour?
Yes. 40 stocked RAL colours for standard lead times. Any RAL Classic colour to order. Contact us with your reference and project quantity.
What drive tool should I use?
An 8mm hex socket on a standard corded or cordless drill at 1,000–1,800 RPM. Keep the driver perpendicular to the substrate. Avoid impact drivers at this length — tip damage before full penetration is a real risk.
Powder Coated Tek Bolts
The 45mm Tek bolt is a prominent fastener — both visually and structurally. RALfixings powder coats every head to your RAL specification using an in-house electrostatic process: colour bonded to the metal, heat cured, and matched to the standard your project references. The finish is durable enough to survive installation, site conditions, and long-term service without fading or chipping.
The coating is applied to the head. The BZP shank and Self-Drilling No.3 point are unaffected — the bolt performs exactly to specification from the first drive to the last.
Benefits of powder coated Tek bolts:
- Scratch resistant
- Rust resistant
- UV resistant
- Weather resistant
- Colourfast
