Oxide Red 13mm × 4.2mm Powder Coated Wafer Head Self Drilling Screws

Description

Our powder coated 13mm × 4.2mm wafer head self drilling screws are the shortest fixing in the range, built for stitching drywall and ceiling track systems and thin sheet metal where the total material is minimal. Most of the shank is self-drilling point with a short, fast-engaging thread, so they bite two thin layers of steel and pull flush without excess length behind the fixing. Engineered for professional trade use, these screws deliver clean penetration and a discreet, flush finished appearance, all without the need for pre-drilling.

The integrated self-drilling point is capable of penetrating steel up to 3.0mm, making this size ideal for stitching track, thin sheet and folded steel. At 13mm it is the lowest-profile screw in the range, with a short thread that engages quickly in thin steel and leaves the least possible protrusion behind the substrate. The 4.2mm diameter gives dependable clamping power in tight spaces where a longer screw would simply be in the way.

The wafer low-profile head distributes load across a wider surface area than traditional pan or countersunk heads, reducing the risk of pull-through on thin materials and helping the fixing sit flatter against the finished surface. This makes the 13mm wafer head self driller a go-to choice for signage systems, hoarding panels, framing, ducting, cable containment and light cladding applications where appearance and performance matter equally.

All screws are powder coated to order in any RAL Classic colour, allowing installers, fabricators and contractors to colour-match fixings to panels, trims, graphics or corporate branding, delivering a cleaner, more professional finished installation.

RAL 3009 Oxide Red is an earthy, industrial red often used in construction and exterior metalwork. It’s a great match for 13mm wafer head self-drillers on cladding and sheet metal where a practical, blended fixing is required.

Specification

  • Length: 13mm
  • Thread Diameter: 4.2mm
  • Head Type: Wafer low-profile head for wide load spread and neat finish
  • Drive: Phillips PH2 recess
  • Tip Type: Self drilling point – no pilot hole required
  • Material: Carbon steel with Bright Zinc Plated base coating
  • Finish: Powder coated to any RAL Classic colour; UV, scratch, weather & rust resistant; colourfast and durable

These 13mm powder coated wafer head self drilling screws are widely used by signage installers, hoarding contractors, steel framers, shop fitters, M&E installers and fabricators who require a dependable fixing for light-to-medium duty applications where aesthetics are still important.

Compared to the longer 16mm and 19mm fixings, the 13mm is the shortest stitching screw in the range – the flattest profile and the least protrusion behind the substrate, built for drywall and ceiling track systems and thin sheet stitching where every millimetre of clearance behind the steel counts. The 4.2mm diameter drives quickly with minimal material stress, giving clean results in thin substrates and tight spaces.

Our precision powder-coating process fuses colour at high temperature, producing a hard-wearing, corrosion-resistant finish that stands up to outdoor exposure, repeated handling and long-term use on site.

Frequently asked questions

What are 13mm wafer head self drilling screws used for?

They’re the shortest stitching length in the range, made for joining drywall and ceiling track, stitching metal stud to track, and fixing thin sheet metal and ductwork where a flush, low-profile head and the absolute minimum of protrusion behind the steel are essential. With a short thread and long drill point, they’re purpose-built for thin, tight assemblies rather than any real build-up.

What materials can these screws penetrate?

The self-drilling point is designed to drill and tap steel up to 3.0mm thick, as well as aluminium and other light-gauge metals, without the need for a pilot hole.

When should I use 13mm rather than a longer wafer head?

Choose 13mm when you’re stitching the thinnest track or sheet and want the shortest, flattest fixing possible – two thin layers of steel with nothing behind them. Because most of the length is drill point with only a short thread, step up to 16mm or 19mm as soon as there’s material build-up, insulation backing or a deeper section to bite into. The 4.2mm diameter drives quicker with less material stress than heavier 4.8mm screws.

Can I choose a specific RAL colour?

Yes. We powder coat these screws to any RAL Classic colour, with fast turnaround and bulk discounts available for trade and large-scale projects.

Powder coated screws

Here at RALfixings, we believe it’s the small details that elevate a professional installation. That’s why we powder coat all our coloured wafer head screws in-house to exact RAL specifications.

Powder coating involves electrostatically applying coloured powder to the fixing before curing it at high temperature, creating a tough, uniform finish that outperforms traditional painted coatings. The result is a durable, colourfast surface designed to withstand site handling and long-term exposure.

Benefits of powder coated self drilling screws:

  • Scratch resistant
  • Rust resistant
  • UV resistant
  • Weather resistant
  • Colourfast

Recommended applications

The shortest fixing in the wafer range, engineered for stitching light-gauge metal track and thin sheet metal without pre-drilling. Most of the shank is self-drilling point with a short, fast-engaging thread, so it is purpose-built for joining thin, tight assemblies rather than any real material build-up. The point cuts its own hole through steel up to 3.0mm, while the wide, low-profile wafer head spreads clamping load and sits flush so it will not foul boards, panels or moving parts fitted over it.

Widely used by drylining and partition contractors for joining metal stud to track before boarding, and by signage and fit-out teams fixing panels directly to steel subframes. Drive with a variable-speed driver and a PH2 bit; let the drill point do the work and avoid overdriving, which can strip the thread in thin gauge steel.

For fixing into timber or pre-drilled substrates where a drill point is not required, see the wafer head self-tapping range.
