Description

Traffic Grey A is one of the most widely specified greys on structural steel and cladding rail systems in the UK. These 13mm x 4.2mm hex head self-drilling tek bolts in RAL 7042 Traffic Grey A are powder coated to match the clean, mid-tone grey standardised across road infrastructure, construction plant, commercial cladding rail systems and architectural steelwork throughout the UK and Europe. On a steel surface in this colour, a bright zinc hex head reads as a cold, metallic intrusion against a balanced neutral that was chosen for precisely that reason.

The self-drilling Tek point cuts directly into light-gauge steel up to 3.0mm thick without pre-drilling. The hex head washer face spreads clamping load across the steel substrate, and the 1/4" hex drive is compatible with standard impact drivers and hex socket nut runners.

These bolts are designed for steel-to-steel fixing applications only. For timber, plastic or composite panel substrates, the flange head self-tapping range is the correct specification.

RAL 7042 Traffic Grey A

RAL 7042 Traffic Grey A is a clean, balanced mid-tone grey with no significant warm or cool bias. It is the lighter of the two standardised traffic greys, sitting noticeably lighter than RAL 7043 Traffic Grey B, and is the grey most commonly found on road infrastructure, construction plant and site equipment steel across the UK. Beyond its infrastructure origins it is one of the most frequently specified greys on commercial cladding rail systems, structural steelwork and architectural metalwork where a neutral, functional mid-grey is the correct specification.

Each bolt head is powder coated to the exact RAL 7042 Classic standard. All RAL colours in the RALfixings range are held in stock for immediate dispatch without special order lead times.

Suitable Applications

13mm RAL 7042 Traffic Grey A hex head self-drilling tek bolts are used across:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between RAL 7042 Traffic Grey A and RAL 7043 Traffic Grey B on steel structures?

RAL 7042 Traffic Grey A is the lighter of the two standardised traffic greys, sitting as a clean, balanced mid-tone grey. RAL 7043 Traffic Grey B is darker, with a slight cool influence that gives it more depth and weight on steel. Both are widely used across infrastructure and structural steel applications, but they are distinct enough that substituting one for the other produces a visible tonal mismatch on a finished steel installation. If your steel structure reads as a mid-tone, balanced grey, RAL 7042 Traffic Grey A is the correct specification.

Do these bolts require pre-drilling?

No. The self-drilling Tek point cuts its own hole and forms the thread as it is driven into the substrate, removing the need to pre-drill. These bolts are rated for light section steel up to 3.0mm thick. For substrates thicker than 3.0mm, a different fixing specification is required.

Can these be used on timber or plastic substrates?

No. These hex head self-drilling tek bolts are designed for steel-to-steel applications only. For timber, plastic or composite panel substrates, the RALfixings flange head self-tapping range is the correct product.

How quickly can you deliver?

RAL 7042 Traffic Grey A is held in stock. Most orders dispatch next working day on a tracked 24-hour service. Larger volume orders typically ship within 3 to 5 working days.

Powder Coated Screws

RALfixings exists to give contractors and specifiers access to colour-matched visible fixings without the compromise of bright zinc heads on exposed metalwork. Every fixing in the range is powder coated in-house to exact RAL Classic colour standards, with consistent batch-to-batch colour accuracy across every pack size.

The electrostatic powder coating process deposits a fine layer of thermoset pigment onto the bolt head, which is then cured under heat to form a hard, permanently bonded shell. This finish outperforms wet paint across every measurable category: adhesion, hardness, chip resistance, UV stability and colour consistency across production runs.

Benefits of powder coated hex head tek bolts:

  • Scratch resistant
  • Rust resistant
  • UV resistant
  • Weather resistant
  • Colourfast

Other Colour Options

These 13mm x 4.2mm hex head self-drilling tek bolts are available in over 60 colour-matched RAL finishes for cladding, roofing and exposed steel metalwork.

Recommended applications

Designed for fixing cladding rails, purlins, and light steel framing to structural steel substrates. The powder-coated hex head matches your panel or cladding RAL precisely, eliminating visible bright metal fixings on exposed metalwork. The self-drilling point removes the need for pre-drilling in light gauge steel.

At 13mm, these bolts are ideal for thin sheet metal connections and light-gauge steel framing where a short fixing length is required. The 1/4" hex drive (6.35mm) is compatible with standard impact drivers and hex socket nut runners.

Not recommended for timber or plastic substrates — use our flange head self tapping range for non-steel applications.
