Coloured 13mm x 4.2mm Wafer Head Self-Tapping Screws
These 13mm x 4.2mm wafer head self-tapping screws are a short, low-profile fixing for stitching thin gauge sheet metal and metal track together without a pilot hole. The sharp point pierces steel up to 0.6mm thick, and the Phillips PH2 recess drives with the bit already in every fixer’s kit.
The wafer head spreads the clamping load over a wide, flat bearing surface, which helps stop the screw pulling through thin metal, and it sits low enough that panels, trims and plasterboard can lie flush over it. They are the screw behind drywall and ceiling track systems, and with a RAL powder coat they also work where the fixing stays on show.
Powder coated to a RAL Classic colour of your choice, the head blends into the surface it is fixed to instead of showing up as a row of bright zinc dots. They suit dry-liners, metal framers, signage and display fabricators to sheet-metal workers.
40 RAL Colour-Matched Finishes
Every screw is electrostatically powder coated in-house and oven cured to a RAL Classic standard, giving a hard, uniform finish that resists scratching during installation and holds its colour once the job is finished. Unlike wet paint, it will not peel or chip when the screw is driven.
Forty-one RAL colours are stocked for dispatch, covering whites, yellows, reds, purples, blues, greens, greys, browns and blacks. Whether you are matching RAL 9010 Pure White track, RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey trims or a bespoke brand colour, the right shade is available. If you need a RAL outside the stocked set, we hold over 400 RAL Classic powders and can coat to order. Contact us with your RAL reference for availability and lead times.
Matching the Screw to the Metal
The limit on this screw is steel thickness. The sharp point pierces thin gauge metal up to 0.6mm, but it has no drill flute. For thicker steel, drill a pilot hole first or choose a self-drilling screw.
Common Applications
4.2 x 13mm coloured wafer head self-tapping screws are used wherever thin gauge metal needs a flat, colour-matched fixing:
- Stitching drywall and ceiling track, channel and stud sections together
- Joining overlapping thin gauge sheet metal
- Fixing sheet-metal trims, flashings and cover strips
- Signage and display fabrication in thin gauge metal
- Low-clearance fixings where a pan head would catch a panel or stop plasterboard sitting flat

Frequently Asked Questions
What are these screws used for?
Stitching thin gauge sheet metal and metal track together without a pilot hole: drywall and ceiling track systems, overlapping sheet-metal panels, trims and flashings. The low-profile head comes in a RAL colour so the fixing matches the finish where it stays visible.
What is the maximum steel thickness?
0.6mm without pre-drilling. The sharp point pierces thin gauge metal but has no drill flute, so for anything thicker you need to drill a pilot hole first or use a self-drilling screw.
Are these self-tapping or self-drilling?
They are sharp-point self-tapping screws. The point pierces thin gauge steel up to 0.6mm and the thread forms its own mating thread, which is why they are often sold alongside self-drilling wafer head screws for drywall track. They are not a replacement for a self-drilling screw on thicker steel.
Why choose a wafer head?
A wafer head spreads the clamping load over a wider area than a standard pan head, which reduces the risk of pulling through thin metal, and its flat top sits low so panels, trims and plasterboard can sit flush over the fixing.
What drive bit do I need?
A PH2 Phillips bit. Drive at controlled speed and stop as soon as the head sits flat, because overdriving strips the thread in thin metal.
Can I choose a specific RAL colour?
Yes. 40 RAL colours are stocked for dispatch, and these screws can be powder coated to any RAL Classic colour on request.
Powder Coated Screws
Colour-matched fixings are all we do. Powder coating in-house means the RAL reference you order is the RAL reference on the screw. The powder is applied electrostatically and heat cured, which produces a harder, thicker and more durable finish than wet paint.
Benefits of powder coated screws:
- Scratch resistant
- Rust resistant
- UV resistant
- Weather resistant
- Colourfast

Recommended applications
A colour-matched wafer head self-tapping screw for stitching thin gauge sheet metal and metal track where the fixing stays visible. The sharp point pierces steel up to 0.6mm without a pilot hole, and the wide, flat wafer head sits low enough that panels, trims and plasterboard can lie flush over it.
Drive with a PH2 Phillips bit at controlled speed and stop as soon as the head seats flat. Overdriving strips the thread in thin metal. Hold the layers tight together before driving, and at 13mm long check the clearance behind the metal before you fix.
Not suitable for steel thicker than 0.6mm - there is no drill flute, so thicker material needs a pilot hole or a self-drilling screw. The zinc plated carbon steel core suits dry interiors and sheltered exteriors; for constantly wet or coastal sites choose a stainless fixing. This product covers all 41 stocked RAL colours.
