Description
DeckingPro™ DS65 in RAL 7035 Light Grey are 4.5 x 65mm A2 stainless steel decking screws for face-fixing thicker light and silver-grey composite boards, stair treads, and structural applications on pale grey decking systems where increased pull-out depth is required. The same cool, clean light grey suits grey-stained and naturally silvered softwood and hardwood timber decking on steps and high-load surfaces, where the longer DS65 provides the structural penetration depth that thicker boards and hardwood subframes demand.
The extra length of the DS65 makes it the correct specification for boards above 22mm thickness, composite and hardwood joist systems, and stair tread fixing where the screw must resist both direct pull-out and the lateral loads generated by foot traffic on steps. On light grey installations where the board tone draws attention to the fixing surface, a screw head that matches the board colour and sits flush is essential to the finished quality of the work.
The sharp point, double countersunk head, and PZ2 drive are consistent across the DeckingPro™ DS range, ensuring predictable installation behaviour regardless of the length specified.
Colour-Matched for a Professional Outdoor Finish
RAL 7035 Light Grey is a clean, cool neutral that reads as near-silver in strong light. On pale composite and timber decking it acts as a near-invisible fixing, the head tone close enough to the board surface that the eye does not register it as a distinct element. This is particularly valuable on stair treads, where the fixing is viewed from a perpendicular angle and any tonal mismatch becomes immediately apparent to someone ascending or descending the steps.
Each DS65 head is powder coated in-house to the same RAL 7035 standard as the DS50, so mixing lengths across a project, with 50mm for the main deck field and 65mm for stair treads, produces a visually consistent result throughout.
Substrate compatibility
DeckingPro™ DS65 in RAL 7035 is suitable for face-fixing a range of decking board materials to timber and steel subframes. A2 stainless steel is required where fixing into corrosive timber species.
- Composite decking boards 25mm and above - light grey and silver grey composite boards requiring deeper subframe engagement
- Softwood timber decking - treated and untreated softwood boards in grey-stained, silvered, or naturally weathered finishes on steps and stair treads
- Hardwood timber decking - hardwood boards with grey oiled, naturally silvered, or pale grey stained finishes where a light grey fixing and greater pull-out depth are both required
- Corrosive timber species - green oak, cedar, sweet chestnut and other tannin-rich species where A2 stainless steel is required to prevent staining and fixing corrosion
- Hardwood and composite joist subframes - where longer thread penetration provides the necessary pull-out resistance
Recommended fixing centres: 300mm to 400mm per board, minimum 25mm from board ends and 15mm from board edges.
Suitable for decking applications including
- Light and silver grey composite boards 25mm and above, for deeper subframe engagement
- Stair treads in pale grey composite systems requiring pull-out resistance under load
- Grey-stained and naturally silvered softwood and hardwood timber decking on steps
- Composite and hardwood joist subframes requiring longer thread penetration
- Commercial balcony and terrace decking in light grey composite and pale timber

Frequently asked questions
When should I use DS65 over DS50 for light grey decking?
Use the DS65 for boards 25mm or thicker, on stair treads and high-load surfaces, or when fixing into hardwood or composite joist systems. For standard 20 to 22mm boards on softwood subframes, the DS50 in RAL 7035 is sufficient.
Can these be used on hardwood and softwood timber decking?
Yes. DeckingPro™ DS65 screws are manufactured from A2-304 stainless steel, suitable for softwood, hardwood, and corrosive timber species including green oak and cedar. The longer 65mm length makes this the preferred choice for hardwood boards, hardwood joist systems, and stair tread fixing in timber where greater pull-out depth is required. The pale grey head suits naturally silvered, grey-oiled, or grey-stained timber boards where a colour-matched fixing is preferable to a standard silver head. Pre-drilling with a 3.5mm pilot hole is recommended for hardwood boards and fixings close to board edges.
What is the difference between RAL 7035 and RAL 7042 for decking screws?
RAL 7035 is lighter and cooler, closer to silver grey and pale ash board tones. RAL 7042 is a warmer, slightly darker mid-grey suited to stone grey and mid-grey boards. For light and silver grey boards, RAL 7035 is the better match. See our DS65 in RAL 7042 for mid-grey boards.
Do I need to pre-drill for these screws?
For composite boards and softwood joists, pre-drilling is not required in most standard applications. For hardwood boards, hardwood joists, or fixings within 15mm of board edges, a 3.5mm pilot hole is recommended to prevent splitting.
How many DS65 screws do I need for decking steps?
Allow approximately 6 to 8 screws per stair tread. A 10-step staircase typically requires 60 to 80 screws, covered by a single 100-pack with some to spare for riser boards.
What are the delivery and lead times on DeckingPro™ screws?
All 8 DeckingPro™ stocked colours are available for same or next working day dispatch on a tracked 24-hour delivery service.
Powder coated decking screws
At RALfixings we specialise in colour-matched visible fixings for exterior use. Every DeckingPro™ screw head is powder coated in-house using an electrostatic process that produces a hard, UV-resistant finish applied to the head only. The full mechanical integrity of the stainless steel base material is maintained throughout.
Benefits of powder coated stainless decking screws:
- Scratch resistant
- UV resistant
- Weather resistant
- Colourfast in outdoor conditions
- Rust resistant - A2 stainless steel core
